100 Ways to Take Your Omega-3's

100 Ways to Take Your Balance Oil
For my Balance Oil girls

100 ways to take it when
straight off the spoon isn't happening.

If you have been dreading your oil every morning, you are not being dramatic and you are not doing it wrong. Some people genuinely cannot do it straight. So let's find your way instead of white-knuckling someone else's.

Here is what I want you to know before the list. Consistency matters more than method. The oil you actually take beats the oil sitting in your fridge because you dread it. There is no gold star for suffering through it.

Start with the troubleshooting below. It fixes the problem for most people in about a week. Then pick something from the list that sounds good to you.

Two rules that apply to every single idea below

1. Never heat it. No cooking, no baking, no frying, no stirring into a boiling pot. Heat oxidizes omega-3s, which wastes the oil and makes the taste worse. Everything here is cold or barely warm. If you can comfortably hold your finger in it, it's fine.

2. Take it with food. Not on an empty stomach. A meal with some fat and protein in it improves how your body handles the oil and is the single biggest fix for the burps.

First, fix the actual problem

Most people who quit don't quit because of the flavor. They quit because of what happens twenty minutes later. Work through these before you go shopping for smoothie ingredients.

The fish burps

  • Take it in the middle of a meal, not before and not after. Food in the stomach is the fix.
  • Try taking it at night with dinner. If any repeat happens, you're asleep for it.
  • Keep it cold. Refrigerate after opening. Cold oil has far less aroma, and aroma is most of what you're tasting.
  • Chase it with something acidic. Lemon water, a bite of pickle, a sip of orange juice.
  • Don't lie down right after. Stay upright for twenty minutes.

The texture

  • Cold changes everything. Straight from the fridge it feels thinner and tastes cleaner.
  • Never let it sit alone in your mouth. Have the next bite or sip ready to go.
  • Mix it into something with body — yogurt, smoothie, hummus. Texture masks texture better than flavor masks flavor.

The gag reflex

  • Cold, fast, chase. That combination beats sipping slowly every time.
  • Breathe out through your mouth while you swallow, then breathe in through your nose after. Most of taste is smell.
  • If it's truly not happening, use the capsules. Genuinely. See number 8.

Give any new method a full week. Your palate adapts faster than you think. The thing that is awful on Monday is often fine by Friday, and unremarkable in a month.

The simplest ways · 1–10

Start here. Most people never need to go further.

  1. Straight from the spoon, cold. Straight from the fridge, one motion, chase with water.
  2. Shot glass, then a water chaser. A little ceremony makes it feel finished rather than endless.
  3. Splash of water in the shot glass first. Breaks the coating feeling on the way down.
  4. Cold sparkling water chaser. The bubbles scrub your palate better than still water.
  5. Lemon wedge chaser. Bite it right after. Acid cuts oil.
  6. Take it mid-bite. Fork of food, oil, fork of food. It barely registers.
  7. Frozen shot glass. Keep one in the freezer. Colder glass, colder oil, less aroma.
  8. Switch to the capsules. Not a failure. A different delivery. Some of my most consistent people are capsule people.
  9. Split the dose. Half at breakfast, half at dinner. Two small unpleasant moments beat one big one.
  10. Pinch your nose. Old trick, still works, no shame in it.

Smoothies & shakes · 11–28

Blend at the end, on low, so you're not whipping air into it. Frozen fruit does more masking than any flavor.

  1. Frozen banana and cocoa. The most forgiving smoothie on earth. Cocoa covers everything.
  2. Frozen wild blueberry. Deep color, deep flavor, and it hides the oil completely.
  3. Mango, orange, and ginger. Bright and tropical. Good for the citrus-flavored oils.
  4. Strawberry banana. The one your kids will also drink.
  5. Green smoothie with spinach, pineapple, and lime. Pineapple is a workhorse masker.
  6. Cherry and cacao. Tastes like dessert.
  7. Peach and vanilla. Soft and mild if strong flavors put you off.
  8. Raspberry and lemon. Tart enough to cut right through the oil.
  9. Coconut milk, pineapple, lime. Piña colada energy, no rum.
  10. Avocado, lime, honey. Creamy body that swallows the oil texture entirely.
  11. Peanut or almond butter and banana. Fat likes fat. Very smooth.
  12. Coffee protein shake, iced. Cold brew, protein, ice. Not hot coffee.
  13. Chocolate protein shake. The easiest swap if you already drink one daily.
  14. Kefir and berry. Tang plus fruit is a strong combination.
  15. Pumpkin, cinnamon, and maple. Autumn in a glass.
  16. Watermelon and mint, blended with ice. Summer, and shockingly effective.
  17. Apple, spinach, and cinnamon. Mild and green without tasting like a lawn.
  18. Blend it into a thick smoothie bowl and eat it with a spoon and toppings. Eating beats drinking for some people.

Yogurt, breakfast & spoonables · 29–40

Anything thick and cold. Stir it in fully so you never hit a pocket of oil.

  1. Greek yogurt with honey. Thick, tangy, and it disappears.
  2. Yogurt with berries and a little cinnamon.
  3. Overnight oats, stirred in the next morning after they're cold.
  4. Chia pudding. The gel texture completely hides it.
  5. Cottage cheese with fruit and a drizzle of honey.
  6. Applesauce. Simple, cheap, and the one that works for people who hate everything else.
  7. Stirred into cold overnight muesli or bircher.
  8. Over a cold fruit salad, tossed like a dressing.
  9. Into a bowl of cold rice pudding.
  10. Over warm oatmeal that you let sit five minutes first. Warm, not steaming.
  11. Mixed into ricotta with lemon zest and honey. Tastes like a dessert you didn't earn.
  12. Into a smoothie bowl base with granola and coconut on top.

Salad dressings · 41–52

This is where the oil genuinely belongs. Shake in a jar, keep it in the fridge, use within a few days.

  1. The basic one. Balance Oil, lemon juice, a little Dijon, salt, pepper. Shake hard.
  2. Balsamic vinaigrette. Balsamic, oil, a touch of honey, garlic.
  3. Honey mustard. Dijon, honey, apple cider vinegar, oil.
  4. Lemon herb. Lemon, oil, parsley, dill, chives.
  5. Herbes de Provence vinaigrette. Oil, white wine vinegar, herbes de Provence, sea salt.
  6. Greek. Oil, red wine vinegar, oregano, garlic, salt.
  7. Creamy avocado. Blend avocado, lime, oil, water to thin, salt.
  8. Tahini lemon. Tahini, lemon, oil, garlic, water to loosen.
  9. Ginger sesame. Oil, rice vinegar, fresh ginger, a little toasted sesame oil, tamari.
  10. Green goddess. Blend herbs, oil, yogurt, lemon, garlic.
  11. Cilantro lime. Cilantro, lime, oil, jalapeño if you want it.
  12. Maple Dijon. Maple, Dijon, apple cider vinegar, oil. Good on anything roasted and cooled slightly.

Dips & cold sauces · 53–64

Made once, used all week. Serve with vegetables, crackers, or whatever you like.

  1. The Italian dip. Oil in a shallow bowl, sea salt, herbes de Provence or Italian herbs, cracked pepper, a little balsamic. Dip and go.
  2. Garlic herb dip. Same idea with fresh minced garlic and parsley.
  3. Stirred into hummus right at the end. Nobody will know.
  4. Baba ganoush, oil stirred in cold.
  5. Whipped feta. Feta, yogurt, lemon, oil, blended smooth.
  6. Tzatziki. Yogurt, cucumber, garlic, dill, oil.
  7. Guacamole, oil folded in at the end.
  8. Pesto, made cold. Basil, garlic, nuts, parmesan, oil. Never heat it after.
  9. Chimichurri. Parsley, oregano, garlic, red wine vinegar, oil. Spoon over food already on the plate.
  10. Salsa verde, oil stirred in at the end.
  11. White bean dip. Blended beans, lemon, garlic, oil.
  12. Olive tapenade, loosened with the oil.

Drizzled over finished food · 65–76

Cook the food. Plate the food. Let it cool a minute. Then drizzle. This is the easiest habit to keep.

  1. Over soup at the table. Ladle, wait two minutes, drizzle on top.
  2. Over roasted vegetables after they come out and cool slightly.
  3. Over cooked rice or quinoa, stirred through once it stops steaming.
  4. Over a baked potato, with salt and chives.
  5. Over avocado toast.
  6. Over scrambled eggs on the plate, not in the pan.
  7. Over a grain bowl as the finishing drizzle.
  8. Over grilled or roasted fish or chicken, once plated.
  9. Over tomatoes with salt and basil. Almost too good.
  10. Over cottage cheese with cracked pepper.
  11. Over cooled steamed greens with lemon and salt.
  12. Over chili or stew, swirled in at the table with a dollop of yogurt.

Cold drinks & shots · 77–84

Shake or blend, and drink it right away before it separates.

  1. Orange juice shot. Small glass, shake hard, drink fast. A classic for a reason.
  2. Tart cherry juice. Dark and strong enough to cover anything.
  3. Cold lemon water with a little honey.
  4. Pineapple juice. One of the best natural maskers there is.
  5. Blended into a cold coconut water.
  6. Shaken into iced herbal tea, hibiscus or berry.
  7. Into a cold ginger lemon tonic with sparkling water.
  8. Into your Zinzino Avatar water or whichever of their drinks you already have on hand, shaken well and taken alongside a meal.

Frozen · 85–90

Freezing dulls flavor more than anything else on this page. If you have tried everything, try this.

  1. Frozen into an ice cube tray with juice, one dose per cube. Suck on it or drop it into a drink.
  2. Blended into a fruit popsicle and frozen in molds.
  3. Frozen yogurt bark. Yogurt, oil, berries, spread thin on a sheet, frozen, then broken up.
  4. Into a frozen smoothie pack you blend in the morning.
  5. Into a nice cream made from frozen bananas.
  6. Frozen into coconut milk cubes and dropped into a smoothie.

For kids, and for the truly struggling · 91–100

If none of the above has worked, one of these usually does.

  1. Capsules. Saying it twice on purpose. The best method is the one you'll do every day.
  2. Hide it in a chocolate protein shake. Cocoa is the most reliable masker in the kitchen.
  3. Stir it into a fruit puree pouch and squeeze it out onto a spoon.
  4. Into a berry sorbet.
  5. Into a small cup of full-fat chocolate milk, shaken hard.
  6. Into a spoonful of nut butter. Fat on fat, one bite, done.
  7. Into honey, stirred, taken as one sweet spoonful.
  8. Into a thick date shake. Dates, milk, ice, oil.
  9. Straight, then immediately a strong mint. Resets your whole mouth.
  10. Change the time of day. If mornings are a battle, move it to dinner and stop fighting.

Storage & keeping it fresh

  • Refrigerate after opening. Cold slows oxidation and makes it taste better.
  • Cap it tightly. Air is the enemy, more than time is.
  • Use dressings and dips within a few days and keep them in the fridge.
  • Trust your nose. Fresh oil smells mild. If it smells sharp or crayon-like, it has oxidized. Don't push through it.
  • Never leave it in a hot car, on a sunny counter, or next to the stove.

Before you start anything on this page

Please talk with your doctor first if you take blood thinners or anticoagulants, if you are pregnant or nursing, if you have surgery or a procedure coming up, or if you manage a health condition of any kind. Omega-3 supplementation can interact with certain medications, and that conversation is worth having.

Take the amount on your label. Don't increase it because you found a method you like.
